I am very naive about bikes, so I am probably not the guy with the best advice.

Having said that - I own an '82 XJ550. Earlier today I started it up, and fully choked, no problem. I let it warm up for a lil bit, and took off down the road. At low RPMs, it was missing and sputtering, but it ran better as the RPMs increased. I brought it back home and took the sparkplugs out only to find them all covered black (I was running really rich). I am now in the process of resyncing my carbs (on hold overnight as I have no light to see right now).

I was hoping I just needed to adjust one screw and be done with it, but each carb is independent of the others. Regardless, what you describe sounds similar to mine. I would start by looking at your plugs and see if they are blackened due to a rich mix. If not, then check the plugs to see if they are sparking. That should help shed light on what's happening.

Has this been going-on awhile ... or is it something new?

Don't waste your Clutch when a tweak or two might set you right.
