The clutch lever on the 82 XJ650 has a lot of up and down free play.

There is an o-ring that is supposed to be in there that is missing. Is the missing o-ring enough to cause excessive up/down free play?

Flats of the perch could be worn or the hole in the clutch lever itself where the bolt passes through could be worn. You may be able to use some sort of shim stock if it is The p e r c h

I'm not Yamaha certified technician, but I think this worn out lever might have something to do with my floppy clutch lever.

There is an O ring that goes in the recess , you are missing this in the Photo.

Yes, of course the o-ring is long gone too, that also can't help.

You are correct, the levers are not expensive. Ultimately, replacement is the answer in my case - especially since I was looking at refinishing mine anyway - so just replacing is a no-brainer. While I'm at it I will replace both levers and all the stuff that goes along with them - o-ring, bushing, etc.

If the perch would have been damaged it would have been a hairier proposition.

My original question was just wondering if there was something really simple going on that was a $2 fix. The answer was no.
