Yes that's what I found. Picked up a parts bike awhile back and found the bike had gas in the oil. So I go to XJ Bikes and find that a stuck float was the likely suspect. I pull the rack and in the #2 carb I find the needle is put in upside down. But, the kicker is the float assembly doesn't look like the stock assembly for this bike. The brass doesn't have the wire gauze filter and the pin isn't square but fluted and with out the rubber tip. I do some searching on the internet and find it looks like the assembly for a 1978-79 XS750. My questions are; (1) will this assembly work if all the pins are installed correctly and (2) am I opening a can of worms when it comes to tuning?

Sounds like a P.O. bodge. Pictures would be nice , I know my carbs that supposedly had been gone through professionally had 2 different jet sizes. I think I would just order new float needle and seats from xj4ever and rebuild the carbs.

You would benefit from totally cleaning and inspecting all the carbs. This way you can verify that the PO didn't bugger anything else in them.

Make sure the jets are where they need to be and of correct size.

Heck, split the rack and church them. I am betting that those shaft seals are long overdue for replacement.

Full rebuild of the carbs and be done. That way you have a spare rack that's ready to go.
