While futzing around with the rat's nest under my seat (looking for a short related to the starter relay, found it) I noticed that I've got a 4-prong connector that doesn't go anywhere. I also notice that the plastic housing under the left side cover holding the TCI and rectifier unit looks like it should have a relay hanging off of it, but there's nothing there.

    1) It seems like it might be part number 9 from this link:
    http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/O ... MOTORCYCLE)/ELECTRICAL_2_(XJ750J_-_1982)

    2) If it is, how have I managed to ride around 9 months without it? Might this be the reason why my engine doesn't cut off when I leave the kickstand down?

Also, is there a source for the plastic multipin connectors used in the wiring "cluster"? I might to replace one related to that short.

Thanks to all 10,000 of you guys!

    1) My bike has the same plug to nowhere

    2) Yes, its your sidestand safety relay. Its fail safe the bike runs w/out it. The relay sends a ground signal to TCI to kill ignition.

if you check out len chacal's "ultimate relay, switch, sensor, and diode guide", he gives the location and name for every relay on every model maxim. it's a real time saver. looks like the relay absent behind your left side cover is your headlight relay, which doesn't allow the headlight to come on until the bike is running, designed to save battery. double check to be sure though. also, i have a lot of "dead ends" on single wires (not whole connectors like you) in my wiring harness as well, i've heard it said that they're for accessories. here you go, compliments of len chacal http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=27543.html
    good luck

forgot to mention, a well stock radio shack should have the white molex male and female connectors you're asking about. usually they have them in 2 pin up to 12 pin connectors in sizes ranging from 22-14 gauge wire. i just picked up a bunch yesterday. they're fairly cheap as well. another alternative is a junk yard.

    Nice, thanks.

And it probably is the headlight relay since mine comes on whenever the key is turned.

XJ750 Maxim models do NOT use a headlight relay, their lights come on when the key is turned on.........

We also carry all the original style connector shells and terminals, if you want to replace any missing/damaged ones that are compatible with the factory connectors.
