hey everyone ... im new here, im looking to buy a 1982 xj750 with a decent amount of mile (42k or so) as my first bike. the guy said he put new plugs and changed all the fluids, but the bike did sit for a year. He had maintenance done on it last year before it sat, but now he said that when you accelerate it doesnt caugh or anything but its kinda hesitant. he wants 1000 and hell give me a helmet. what do you think its worth, what should i look at on the bike before i shell out any money and what do you tink its worth. paint isnt shiny, seat needs to be redone and everything else is ok. Help and opinions please. thanks a bunch to anyone who can help me out here. :?

Pardon my bluntness but...screw the used helmet, offer the guy $800 (as long as the bike is complete) and get ready to drop another $800 into it. Just make sure it runs and doesn't smoke (as in burn oil) before you do it. Hesitation could be any number of things, many related to sitting or neglect (plugged/saturated air filter comes to mind...) You will inherit a whole bunch of hopefully minor problems (it's 26 years old remember) but these things were very well engineered and the problems are usually quite surmountable...

Before I shelled-out a Grand for an 82 Bike with 40,000+ Miles on it; I'd need:

    A Compression Test (Minimum)
A road test for at least a half-hour (Gearing and shifting)

A diagnosis why it hesitates (Carb cleaning due)

Tell him you know you are going to need to have those Carbs pulled and cleaned and see if you can negotiate down a couple of hundred dollars.

Don't be buying somebody else's problems.
Make sure you can make a solid running bike out of that investment before you close the deal.

I recently sold an '82 650 RJ for $1K. It has closer to 34K miles and ran very well. I agree with the other posts about test driving and making a lower offer, but the range is fair in my opinion. I could have sold mine several times over - or gotten more money if I didn't want to move it quickly.

The bike I sold was my first bike - and I've had 2 more just like it - and I'm sold on them. Good luck with making a purchase.

Congrats on the new bike but a couple of words of advice. NEVER trust the POs word for anything unless you know them very well (and then be careful). Change the fluids yourself. Search this site for a list of things you should be checking (saved me a lot of headaches). Read the posts on this site, I have learned a ton of stuff in just a few weeks about these bikes even though I have owned and maintained several other bikes previously.

NEVER trust a used helmet - it's your head. One drop can ruin a helmet and the pads conform to fit your head, so a used helmet will match the POs head. You can get a decent helmet for $100 and a good one for about $200 your head is worth the money....

Nothing more exciting then your first bike. Nothing more disheartening then problems with it. Post your problems - the crew here is EXCELLENT at helping out.

Change the oil. Repeat, change the oil. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Oil is your engines life blood. Sitting for a year the gas can leak down and thin out the oil.

You should also change the filter, but, since you will be changing the oil again real soon, you can skip it this time if you want.

The reason I say that you will be changing the oil soon is that you want to warm up the engine and get the stuff moving. I used Sea Foam in my bike as soon as I got it. ran it until it got warm. Drained the oil it came with and put in cheap oil and ran it again until it got warm and drained that. The color on the second oil coming out was almost worse than the first. I then filled it with good quality Castrol oil.

Do not use synthetic as the bike has a "wet" clutch. And it doesn't like synthetics.

As for titling the bike, I don't think it matters what type of liscense you have. At least here in Minnesota it doesn't. All the title does is say who the owner of the bike is. Not who is riding it.

Oh yeah. Welcome to the world of the greatest motorcycles ever made. These things are DAMN fun.

That might not necessarily be the case. From what I'm led to believe (I haven't tried it myself) a synthetic would be just fine as long as the bottle specifies a JASO MA rating, which is intended for use in wet clutches.

That's right. There are lots of synthetics that are made specifically for motorcycles and are ok with wet clutches. What you want to stay away from are any with additives or putting in additives of your own that aren't approved.

Inno87, congrats on the new bike. Have fun and post some pics of it soon.

I just use the cheap regular gas! If I hit the throttle it's hard to hang on!
The owners manual just states regular gasoline.
