My forks are leaking fluid so I guess it's time to fix it, I'm not sure what fluid/oil I'm supposed to use and how much to use.

You're not sure - neither is anyone else my friend.
If you click the xj forever insignia at top right of the page it will (after a few seconds) load up a whole list of information about your particular brand of xj. Find the bit on front forks and fill your boots.

You have the joy of having one of the more complex fork set in the XJ world.
Thankfully we have a handy set of articles to help.

Luckily all of the parts are once-again available, so if you accidentally damage those fragile washers on the oil-lock you can get new ones from @chacal

What weight of fork oil to use really depends on your weight, how and where you ride, and if you regularly have a passenger or cargo onboard. The actual viscosity of oil tends to vary between manufacturers, even when the same weight is specified on the bottle.
309cc of 20 weight fork oil is what's called for, but most of us tend to prefer something closer to 15 weight. The 20 weight makes for a too-harsh ride unless the roads are in perfect condition.

You'll also need this once you have the brakes hooked back up (unless you get really lucky and manage to block off the lines to the anti-dive without losing any fluid).
