i have a 1983 xj750 in the last month I have gone through 4 starter relays. I was curious if anyone has heard of using one from a Mazda or Toyota car. I have heard of people using these just not sure of a part number to get one from an auto part store instead of waiting a week at a time for shipping. Also where would I start checking for the reason it keeps going out after about 5-6 starts got the bike free but the wiring is jacked up really bad and trying to rewire everything as it should be or so it will work any help will be appreciated

you are talking about the solinoid that is hooked to the battery and not the starter safety relay correct?

does it still click and just not make the connection from battery wire to starter to turn the starter?
or is the winding that the 2 small wires connect to burn open check its resistance.13K ohms I think I will check my spare tommorow.
can you jump the large connector nuts to spin starter?

do a voltage drop test hook meter to battery jump across nuts see what your battery voltage drops to .

sounds like your starter may be drawing to much amps and is frying contacts. unless the winding is opening.

did you buy the relay from the same place each time?

yes you can use any relay/solinoid to turn starter.

Maybe just find another wiring harness? Oh wait I have one sitting on a bike in the driveway. Engine went bang so it's a parts bike.

you are looking in the wrong direction.

solenoid red and blue wires should ohm at 3.5 to 4.5 ohms measured 7 of them and all work. for the solinoid windings on those wires to fail would require heavy amp draw through the windings more than just pressing starter button. consider that red wire is supplied 12 volts by a 10 amp fuse and starter button is ground.

is it the starter contacts that are failing (large wires) and your starter fails to spin?
if that is what is happening you have a bad starter of are just buying crap solinoids .

where and what type solinoids are you buying ?
also consider if you got them from same place he has a bad lot of them or is selling you incorrect part.
