    Hey there,

Just bought an 83 maxim 650. LOVE it, tons of fun to ride.

Anyways, to the point, I'm going to change the oil on the weekend. I've done a search of the site and didn't find exactly what I was looking for. It could've been there, so fogive me if this is a repeat topic. Basically all I need to know is once the oil is drained and the new filter is on, how much oil and what type would my bike take? I know where it's supposed to be in the site window, but I'd rather know the numbered quantity. I've ordered a manual, but it hasn't come yet so I'm just hoping that somebody that has one could look it up and let me know.

I know I know, "wait until you get the manual." I would, but this weekend will be the only time in a while I'll have total access to a garage, oil pan.....plenty of other things to make life easier.

    Thanks

ps....front brakes, doing those as well. Anything special I should know? I'm assuming if I can change the brakes on my car (which I can) I could do it on the bike.

    Mr. Brown:

I don't know about the larger bikes, but my '82 400 has the oil capacity cast into the engine cases near the sight glass (2300cc, 2.3 liters).

    Worth a look!

    Welcome to the site mrbrown.

Here's some info from XJCD manuals:

    Engine oil capacity:
    Total amount 3.5 litres
Oil and filter change 2.65 litres
    Oil change 2.35 litres

    Recommended lubricant:
If temperature does not go below 5 degrees C SAE 20W/40 SE motor oil
If temperature does not go above 15 degrees C SAE 10W/30 SE motor oil

Oil choice is one of those personal things as to what people buy and use. If you search for oil I'm sure you will find all kinds of topics on it!

For the 650 it is 2.8 qt. without oil filter change adn 3.1 qt, with filter change; which equates to 2650 milliliters and 2950 milliliters.

Nick posted the correct capacities, which are:

    2.8 quarts with filter change.

    2.484 quarts without filter change.

The 3.1 quart number is for a dry engine: ie after a rebuild.
