I was riding happily along when I suddenly could not pull out of second gear. The Venture runs great in first and second but will not allow any movement towrard third. I thought I read on here that someone had experience with some rubber or plastic falling apart and hindering the movement.
Any thoughts? I shudder to think what may be necessary.

As I have 3 Ventures, and have read extensively on the subject, you may be looking at an engine removal and break-down to find the problem.

If it's the EXACT same problem, of a chunk of plastic from a chain tensioner lodged into the shift mechanism - you "fish around" with a bit of coat hanger wire to dislodge the hunk of plastic.

You should post-up your problem on a Venture site.

Thanks Time - The fishing, is that a hopeful alternative to pulling the motor and cracking the case?
I'll get in the Venturers site and see what they can do for me as well. Thanks Again.

Boy Time, I haven't heard of that.

What is real common is pins coming out of the shift sector. The shift sector is on the right side behind the clutch basket. I'd look there first.

not sure if it is related to your problem, but I've heard earlier model Ventures are notorious for failing 2nd gears. that's about the extent of what I know or have heard said about the earlier year Ventures. don't quote me on it as I'm younger than your '83 Venture; and I realize it may not even be related to your problem.

    +1 on what MiCarl mentioned.

They are, but the symptom is they jump out of 2nd. You can shift past it to 3.

AT this point I wouldn't mind that failing or even jumping 2nd gear. But I can't get past 2nd and there is no movement or play in that direction either.
I've been spending some time getting the XJ700 on the road and have covered up the Vennture for now. Honestly I am having so much fun with the XJ I may drain the venture and park it until Fall.

I have a Venture also similar problem a few years ago. Just like MiCarl said, look at the shift selector, I bet the pins have fallen out. Mind did.
All new parts can be ordered from any Yamaha parts site for around 50$.

I may have time next weekend to get into unless something comes up. I really want to get that Venture back on the road.
    Thanks Men
