I bought "what i believed to be" an 83 XJ750K some weeks ago, and Ive been working on it to get it roadworthy once again. I ran the VIN number today, for fun, and found out it is a XJ750 midnight. What are the differences, if any, between the two models?

I'm not sure off the top of my head what the K was, but I think that was just the '83 Maxim, wasn't it? The only difference between the Maxim and the Midnight Maxim was the color scheme, if I'm not mistaken--black and gold. There might have been some other minor cosmetic differences, which some people will fill you in on.

Also, your side covers are probably worth their weight in gold, if you have them.

Some of the documents indicate that the Midnight Maxims had a slightly taller set of gears, others say they are the same. Whatever.

As far as the rest of the bike:

The K simply denotes the year 1983.

The color: Midnight Maxims are black, Black finish rather than chrome, gold rims, gold pinstripe on the rear gear, gold pinstripe on the footrest brackets, gold caps on the carbs, gold swingarm pivot caps, gold grab bar, and the emblems are script with gold lettering.

If your side cover emblems have been painted, try to carefully clean the lettering. It may still be gold underneath. If the gold is gone, clean them well and then use gold leaf and re-do them.

There are people on the forums here who have enough pics up, so if you search, you'll find them easy enough.
