I'm getting ready to do a valve adjustment on my 1982 xj750 k. The bike only has 7100 miles on it. It is probably never had its initial adjustment done. Will I need to use to of the Yamaha part number 01245 valve adjustment tools to be able to swap between cylinders.

From this point on start a thread for your bike and keep all of your questions and progress in there. Makes it easier to provide help, and prevent confusion.

You can't hold more than one valve open at a time without causing damage to at least one valve.
Shim swaps are done with a spare shim, or by planning the swap so that the shim being swappped is replaced by a new correct-sized shim before it is moved into its new location.

Actually I believe you CAN do two valves at a time. Just watch the valvetrain to see which two are open at the same time:)

I think so to because 2 cylinders come TDC at a time

But not on the same stroke, so (for example) #4 is on exhaust when #1 is on intake. The odds are against needing one of those two shims to swap into the other position. It can happen, but the odds...

I often will CHECK two at a time. Then when I know what I need, I will install the two open valves with whatever shims are needed.... The Beauty of hosting a shim pool---- you don't HAVEto swap between the two open valves.....you can MEASURE two valves at once, and you can install two shims at one time--- they don't have to be swapped specifically with each other. You just do two at a time rather than just one.
