1983 xj750 seca question

    ok guys
    stupid question
    but does the xj750 have transmission oil?
    and if it does where do you apply it too ?
    and what kind of oil?

    Nope. It has a "wet clutch" meaning it uses engine oil. And that's why you want to use motorcycle specific oil, with no additives. There's no separate transmission dipstick like on a car, if that's what you were asking. There is final drive oil, but that's a completely different issue. For that you use gear oil. (I'm talking about the pumpkin on the back wheel, you know, the differential?) But that's the only fluids I can think of in a 750. Bike engine oil and gear oil.

    Oh, I came up with more fluids, lol. Fork fluid, brake fluid. Um...gas? That's it, I'm sure of it;)

    so car oil cant be used for my xj750 ?
    what kind of oil does it need and where to get it ??

    There's a bunch of "what kind of oil" threads. I can't actually remember the best kind. Castrol '4T' or something like that. Anyway, just make sure the side of the bottle says "specifically for motorcycles, safe for wet-sump clutches" or words to that effect. Any motorcycle shop like Cycle Gear, or a dealership, I believe even some Wal-marts have bike oil. The main problem is that modern oil additives make our clutches slip, so I've been told.

    Thanks for the endorsement, Mike.

    Virtually any auto parts chain these days has motorcycle oil, usually off in its own section. My local Auto Zone carries Castol 4T and Havoline. Use 20W50 since the Yamaha recommended 20W40 is hard to find these days.

    Stay away from synthetics, even those for motorcycles. The starter 'sprag' clutch doesn't appreciate synthetics.

    ok guys i did a oil change i put exactly 3 quarts
    and when i fired her up lots of oil came out from the crankcase breather is this normal?

    I believe your oil capacity, which is stamped on the oil tank on my bike, is 2500 cc. This is less than three quarts, especially taking into account any oil that didn't drain. Not to be one of those "get a manual" guys, but...do you have a manual? The instructions for changing oil state to add oil until you have an air bubble at the top of the sight glass(you know, the window where you can see the oil?) When the bike is level, there should be some air at the top of the window. Then run the bike a little, let it sit a while and check again(level).

    You probably just over-filled it.

    To add a little clarification on how to check the oil level.

    Place the bike on the center stand, and let is sit for approx 10 minutes
    You should see a small bubble in the top of the window
    If check with the bike on the side stand. The sight window WILL show a low reading.

    If you are getting oil out of the vent. It is possible that you might have a petcock/carb problem that is allowing gas to fill the crankcase. You can check this by doing a sniff test at the oil fill hole on the clutch cover.

    If you smell gas. Then you need to stop running the engine are start checking out the fuel system.
