OK.. first things first. I was able to pick this damper up for only $20 in excellent condition with all mounting hardware I could see it needs.

My problem is that I cannot find anything in my Haynes manual that shows me how it is installed or it's orientation so that I could fab something up. The only entry in the manual talks about the 1983 model...

"having a standard, round, steering damper installed by an allen bolt underneath the steering head. Those models fitted with fairings or luggage have a piston-type damper which is bolted to the frame front downtubes and clamped to the left-hand fork stanchion."

I don't know for sure which damper this is, nor what a stock installation looks like. The black brackets in the bottom right of the image coming off the damper body freely open/swivel to allow installation with four rather small looking holes.... I am confused..

Any help or pics (hint, hint) would be greatly appreciated..... I am hoping to get this to work somehow. My bikes turning/leaning wobbles need to go bye-bye. All other normal causes have been investigated and remedied.

    Thnx in advance.

The XJCD has some info on installing the steering damper under the "rear package" heading.

From the looks of it, your steering damper is the same one that I have on my 81 Seca.
The 2 large bolts in the center of the mounting bracket go through 2 holes in the frame where the it splits just under the triple tree, (just above the exhaust)
The 4 small holes in the other part of the bracket should line up with the small screws that hold the side marker reflectors to the frame.
They are they to keep the bracket from twisting laterally. The 2 large bolts do most of the work, the smaller ones are there for stabilizing the entire assembly.
It's a strange set up but does work fairly well.
Its nice to have the damper on the highway at higher speeds. It takes a lot of the small movements out of the steering on a rougher road too.
If you still can not figure it out, I have added a picture to my gallery to help you out.

    Thanks guys...

I had the "orientation" mixed up in my head and could not for the life of me understand how or if this was going to work. It attached just like welasercut said it should. Gonna be 75 today, so I am gonna get to give her a try later.

Are there any adjustments that can be done to the damper itself? There is one small screw coming out of the bottom of the damper facing forward. Is this some sort of resistance modifier like the pneumatic closer on a screen door??? Just curious if you can adjust the sensitivity of the damper or anything..
