    Hi everyone,
I just got a 1984 XJ550L Maxim and I can't find any reference to this particular model. I see nothing after the 1983 XJ550K which seems to be the last year for the 550. According to the serial number, it really is a 84 model.

Anybody knows if it's in any way different from the 83?

    Thanks! Great Forum.

Where are you located? It's probably a Euro model, would need the full VIN to verify.........

Hmmmmm...that's one of those "missing further info" models............it certainly is a 1984 model, and the 5K6 code is an XJ550 model, the "L" and the "E" in the VIN number both testify to it being a 1984 model. But the list does not show what country or georgraphic area that model was produced for........I'm going to suspect it was for Europe, but ?????

Do you know any history of the bike? Does it have a single or dual front disc brake system, and if single, is the rotor on the left or right side of the wheel?

Does it have the smooth-sides "Maxim" style tank or the "scalloped sides" that was used on the 550 Seca models?

Finally, does it have a fuel gauge in the instrument cluster?

    Pictures?

I just checked the Clymer's manual. There is an '84 XJ 550 listed for the U.K. Everything else in '84 is the XJ600.

Yep, exactly right. UK is almost "Euro", isn't it?

I agree, but I know a few Brits that would disagree.

It has a single brake disc on the left side, a Maxim style gas tank and no fuel gauge. I have the owner manual, which is in both english and french. I got it from my brother who bought it from the original owner in 1997. Interestingly, this original owner said that he got it brand new from the dealer in 1993 as surplus inventory.
