A 1985 700 cc maxim x I disassembled and cleaned the carbs. After assembly I bench synced them and installed them on the bike. I started the bike without choke and no throttle, it instantly reved up to I don’t know what I didn’t look at the tach I just turned it off, but i’m guessing 8 or 9 k. This happened 3 or 4 times in a row in a period of 45 seconds. Right after that it started normal, didn’t rev way up, but didn’t idle right. I could not adjust the idle it ran very eradicatly and then shut down. It did this the next morning. It acted this same way six weeks ago after carb cleaning. I can’t figure out what is wrong. I can’t figure out how the engine is getting so much to rev up the way it does. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear from you. Pete

Nothing will run without air and fuel in the right proportions. Your carbs are open, or the starting enrichners are.
It's quite simple really. Addjust the idle knob until it comes off - you can feel this with a finger. Back in one full turn.
There, set, enough to start it. Did you bench synch? How?

I used a piece steel high E string from a guitar. It’s .012 thick. First I set the carb that is adjusted using the idle screw, then I set the others using the corresponding screws. Then I installed the carbs. When the engine reved up so high I was surprised that I could get the rpm down to normal with the idle screw. I felt .012 was already damn near closed. After seeming to have the idle under reasonable control I was having “hanging idle” difficulty so I opened each pilot screw 1/8 turn, no help did another 1/8. Seems pretty good now. A little more time will tell. I am hoping to sync with mercury tube tool next. This is the first time I have done any bench synchronization. I have done the engine running merc tube thing a few times, not good at it but can try to stumble through it.

I want to thank you so much. I was so happy to hear from you and you have been so very very much help. I can tinker some more and hopefully get it to where it should be. This is the first time I have used a forum so bear with me. I have had to have my son help. Thank you so much again, I was lost ,but now I’m thrilled to learn some more about this stuff.

Running synch is all about doing it in the right order - with a four gauge setup you can do it in minutes, if you have two it means some swapping around of the second gauge. Even one gauge isn’t hard to do. There must be a how to around here - anyone?
