Any tips on whether a 1985 FJ100 is a good bike? I am looking for tips on rebuild and self-service capabilities compared to my 1982 650 Maxim.

    Thanks

AWESOME bike. It's a next-generation XJ with a whole bunch of plastic in the way of that self-service you're talking about. Smooth, fast, reliable-- just like an XJ.

Once the tupperware is off, it's quite XJ-like in terms of maintenance (valves, etc.)

As for rebuild, the same caveats apply: not a lot of "deep" motor rebuild parts available, just like the XJs. Remember it's only 3 years newer than your bikes...

Thanks bigfitz. The guy who is selling it did a carb teardown and his description sounds just like what I did to my carbs.

I would sort of prefer an XJ1100 but the FJ bikes seem to be more available within driving distance.

ive seen some really nice used ones in atlanta 1100 and 1200s cheap that need some work. i thought about buying 1 but have 2 many bikes at the moment. i think they have a few issues 1 is they like to run hot i guess because of the ferrings. but if your going to rebuild it it wouldnt matter just dont sit in traffic .could allways put a big oil cooler that would help. thats the main reason i have kinda stayed away from them i herd its a great bike but here in atlanta the traffic is so bad kinda scares me some days takes over an hour to come home from work 20 miles and thats not even rush hour

Grab the FJ with both hands. A very fun bike to ride. Handles like it was on rails when compared to the XJs
