So the manual is a little fuzzy on the details and I searched and cannot find any information on this thing. Does the 1986 700 engine have a timing pointer or is the "T" supposed to line up with the pickup on the rotor? This engine does not have a pointer to line up with, only an empty threaded hole?

Do you have the Yamaha service manual? If so you will see the picture of the "Ignition Timing Check" on page 5 of the Supplementary Service Manual which is towards the end of the Manual (just before you get to the Appendix pages).

For the '86 models, Yamaha eliminated the pointer and re-positioned the marks on the rotor. And for your model, the T mark is supposed to line up with the notch on the upper pickup for top dead center.

    Here's some links for reference:
    '85 models
    '86 models

    Hope that helps.

Thank you very much, I figured it out and got a good reading on everything. I love this forum, you guys are very helpful. I did not see that part of the manual until I read through the entire thing.

I just ran into the same thing. No pointer just an empty threaded hole. Must be normal for the 86X

Yes it was one of those subtle model year changes that stumped me as well a couple of years ago.

I have to give credit to Chacal (Len) from XJ4ever for helping me understand the difference between the two. He can be a tremendous help, and that's why I use him as my go to guy for any of my parts needs.
