    I'm considering buying a 1989 Yamaha XJ650 Police Special.

What should the normal engine compression range be? What are the valve clearances on the intake and exhaust valves?

In general what things should I look out for before buying this bike? Could anyone provide a checklist? Is there a service manual I could download?

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to bikes, so any and all info will be more than welcome.

    Many thanks.

That's a new one on me. Are you sure about the make/model?

    I think so:

    1988 XJ650 MODELS:

    COUNTRY: OTHER

    MODEL NAME: XJ650P88 Police Special
    MODEL ID CODE: 37G
    FRAME ID: 37G
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 000101

No idea where you'd ever find a service manual for it, though. The local police department archives?

The valve clearances MAY be on the inside of the side cover on the tune-up specifications decal, if it is still there.

I'd like to see a picture of this bike. I looked on Google, but who knows if those are right.

I think all the Technical Data would be the same for the XJ650's right across the board with the exception of "Electrical"

The Handlebar Controls and Wiring Harness would differ.
Additional Push Buttons and Switches for Siren and Lights.

Additional Wiring for 2-Way Radio hook-up at the rear.

"It's got a cop motor, a 650 cubic centimeter plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"
