Hello again everyone. I picked up a new project bike for 450 bucks. Its a 1990 Ninja zx750. Pretty rare, and supposedly a fast and good riding sport/tourer. All the plastics were thrown into a tote, but complete. Heres some crappy first pics.

Should be a fun bike when finished, but right now I'm getting stuck by a few problems. First, the bike has a header with a vance and hines pipe, and the stock airbox is removed and beyond repair. I was still able to get it to run decent, but only by choking the carbs with my forearm while giving it some throttle.

So first off, i'm considering going with the pod air filters. Even with these on there I will need to re-jet correct? It seems like it needs a lot of restriction to run correctly...

AND my even bigger problem and main question is the clutch. When I first pulled the lever I felt no resistance at all. So I checked fluid level, added a bit ( although I dont think I needed to )

Then I traced the line back to the engine ( no leaks that I could see ), and bled the system. Lots of air. I was able to get some feel back in the lever after bleeding, but although now it "feels" like it works, it doesnt disengage anything. Even with the clutch pulled to the grip, the bike refuses to roll when in gear. I havent done any tests with it running, but I assume it would end up with alot of gear grinding, and me flying out of the garage with a runaway bike :)

So where would you go from here? I realize this is an xj forum, but you guys have always been great help, and I still own an xj. So I figured I'd try you first. Thanks.

They called them GPX750's over here in Oz. Not big sellers (dubious styling, I believe), but a nice engine (the predecessor to the ZXR750).

You will need to re-jet with pods, but it will run much better with the airbox. See if you can get one off eBay.

As for the clutch, I'd say the plates are just gummed together from sitting. Snap it into gear when the engine is running and it should free up (make sure you have the front brake on though!)

My 87 ZX750F seems to be a bit sticky even after sitting for just a couple of days. Always have to make sure I give it a little extra gas in the morning when putting it in gear for the first time. Once she warms up it's all good but she is always a little clunky going into first. Common for these from what I have read. You might try putting the front wheel against a wall to hold her back or find a hill to coast down and then pop her in gear whilst holding in the clutch. :)
