Hey Guys, first off just want to say that this forum has been immensely helpful already, so thanks everyone for that

I picked up a 1994 Seca II as my first project bike because it was very clean, everything was working mechanically except it had been "sitting through the winter." I believe the exact amount of time was seven months. Maybe I was naive, but all my testing has seemingly confirmed this. Nevertheless, I am having some trouble getting the damn thing going. Could not even get it to start with starter fluid, which was concerning to me. Previous owner said the bike was in good running condition before winter.

I already cleaned and degunked the carbs, albeit did not replace any parts yet. Everything inside looked functional when I went through. Admittedly, in my excitement, I forgot to set the float heights after the cleaning. I know I have to go back and do this again.

Compression test was done cold for obvious reasons, and each cylinder had between 125 and 130. I know this is on the low side, but it should be enough for the engine to get started/run poorly, no?

Spark appears to be good across the board. I was doing the test in broad daylight so it was a little difficult, but I saw blue spark for all cylinders.

I've heard alot about the dreaded starter idler gear, but I do not hear any grinding or anything of the sort when I turn over the bike. Would there be other symptoms of this?

I know I'm a newbie and could've done something totally wrong, especially with the carb cleaning, so feel free to yell away. I could also be leaving out some pertinent information simply because I don't know it's relevant, I also know for a fact the fuel pump is totally screwed, and a new one is in the mail. At this point I am really just trying to get the engine to show some life with starter fluid or a gravity feed fuel tank.

    Thank you in advance!

Your machine is ssentially an updated XJ550. You will not have much reason to be concerned about the starter clutch.

Because of the nature of the carbs your machine has, it will not be starting until you have that new fuel pump hooked up.

If you want to se if she'll fire, get a can of carb cleaner, or ether, and spray it into the intake with the air filter out. If she'll fire on that then any other problem would be carb related.

Even though your machine is 10 years newer, it still will need all of the undone maintenance caught up on.

Awesome, appreciate the input man. My main concern is obviously the compression - do you think the current range is enough to get it going?

I also have reason to believe now that the previous owner may mislabeled the spark plug wires- would explain alot. Away from the bike for a few days but I'll post an update when I get a chance.
