you know below your user name that it says 1st gear, 2nd gear, etc? Shouldn't we as xj owners have only five gears possible? I wish Yamaha had put in a sixth for just about every xj and xv...just a thought that's been in my head for awhile.

I wish there was a 6 speed tranny that would bolt right in!

I don't know much yet about all models of XJ's, however, my XJ600s (1994) has 6 gears. So if I ever spent an enormous enough amount of time on here and become a post wh*re, then it will be quite fitting when I reach "6th Gear".

the chain-driven 550's have 6 gears... the ratios are squeezed a bit closer together, so you still don't get a whole lot of top end. My maxim goes about 100mph at ~8500-8600 RPM, which is where it tops out.

That refers to the numbers of posts you have made, i think this is the official list, as described in this post

    1-5 = Biker wannabe
    6-10 = Gear grinder
    11-40 = 1st gear
    41 – 80 = 2nd gear
    81 – 130 = 3rd gear
    131 – 200 = 4th gear
    200 – 270 = 5th gear
    271 – 350 = Red liner

I know it stands for the amount of posts you have, but isn't it funny that this on an xj site (where most xj's have five gears) that there is a sixth gear in the avatar area?

I love the extra (6th) gear on my Seca. I always thought the Maxims should've used the same setup, but I dont mind the extra shifting around town. As to not much more top end, I blow past 100 mph in 6th with plenty of revs left to go.
