While I'm waiting on some carb parts to arrive thought I'd get started on this 550 Seca's brakes. No fluid in the system and tons of crud in the master....actually I have the master pretty much crystal clean (even that teenie tiny hole is clear!).
My question is: "How do I break apart the caliper? Got the pads and pin out...I removed the cotter from the slide pin, but how do I break the two halves of the caliper apart? That pin (with the rubber boots on it), does not want to free itself from the caliper....do I tap it out or pull it with a pliers? Don't want to bust it, so I thought I'd ask questions first....
    Thanks

Did you clean out the plunger and hone the bore?

If you just cleaned the reservoir, that didn't do a whole lot.

Well, not sure if you're answering my question or checking my work?

MY question was how do I split the caliper halves?

To answer your question, yes, of course I cleaned the bore, and polished it.

Do you think I can reuse this part?

buy the rebuild kit with the piston , you can try to clean it.

there are 2 pins one goes through the pads. then there is a plastic cover 1 screw top rear of caliper ,take that off there is a pin going through the caliper halves you will see 2 rubber boots with a pin going from one side to the other spray with pb blaster then tap it out with a dowel

the boots are very expensive 25$ each try your best not to tear them . the boots are fitted in and hard to remove fit into a recessed groove in the side of the caliper
need a pic I will post one shortly

when you go to install the pads you may have to file out the holes in the pad into an oval to properly fit on the pin,
chacal states this in one of his writings I think it is in his brake parts section.

Crap! I need a little help here!

Got the calipers split (thanks 550H)....How important are those stainless slides? You guessed it....somehow, at some point, that little one took off on me and for the life of me I can't find it anywhere....of course it's not shown as a separate part, so I can't order one...does anybody have one? How catastrophic would it be if I went without it (I really don't like second guessing those early 70's Japanese engineers, especially when it comes to brakes...they put it there for a reason).

    I'm open to ideas.....
