When I purchased my bike I assumed it was typical 5 gear, however on shift cover it lists 6 gears, imprinted is 1N23456 while driving I shifted to 5th and did not get a 6th? is there a secret to this LOL or is it more likely that a previous owner replaced the cover?

My guess is you have a cover off a Seca.

Not sure if they are interchangable but my 550 Seca has six gears.

I thought the 750 seca was still only five speed though.

my 750 seca is only 5 speed, and the Haynes manual only lists 5 speed for the xj650 & 750's for 1980 to 1982

6th is nice  You'll have to trust me on that. Every now and then I leave it in 5th just to see what you guys have to out up with. STill does 140kph in 5th.

I'm guessing your cover is from an 81 XJ550 Seca.

Next time you have it off see if it's got one of the 550 model code numbers stamped inside it. Usually 4U8 or 4G0

I used to have a 82 750 Max and it was a 5 speed. I now have a 81 550 Max which is a 6 speed. My only guess is that the cover has been changed.

It's not uncommon for those to be replaced. If the chain ever breaks then that cover usually sustains quite a bit of damage.
