So, I just bought an old XJ550. Quick question. Where is the bike marked if it is a H,J,K, RJ, or RK?

On the label on the steering head.

The "R" indicates a Seca, Maxim is without the "R" and the H, J or K indicates model year. USA Seca 550 VINs begin "4U8" 550 Maxims begin with "5K5."

If it's a USA model Seca and has original paint, the '81 (RH) was white w/red flashes, the '82 (RJ) was red w/silver flashes, the '83 (RK) was black w/scarlet and maroon flashes.

If it's a Maxim (no "R") I don't have the colors memorized. Post your VIN number (or look it up here) to find out more: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14577.html

NP. Look in my gallery, there's an RH and an RK for you. The white bike came with a removable fairing, so I removabled it.

White bike is closer to original stock than the black one.
