    Greetings - been perusing the forums today and am very impressed! I just rolled my old neglected 81 Seca 550 from the back of the shop where it has been sitting for about 15 years. I have lots to do to make it streetable again, but the reason it was parked in the first place was that the throttle shaft seals were leaking so badly, it wouldn't idle. I know I can get the other carb parts, but what about those seals? I couldn't find anything years ago... The carbs are the factory original CVs.
    Thx in advance.

    But of course. See Chacal for ordering.

    -----------------

    aaa) OEM and aftermarket Mikuni carb Throttle Shaft V-Seal (sometimes called an "O-Ring", but it's not!)...these are the seals on the outside of the carb body that the throttle shaft passes through. Uses 2 per carb, BUT......without taking the carbs apart from the rack, the only ones you can replace are the outer seals on the #1 and the #4 carbs. Unlike the QR-series "o-rings" that many people recommend using---AND WHICH DO NOT FIT PROPERLY---these "V-Seals" do have the correct O.D., I.D., and thickness to fit both the throttle shaft and the carb shaft seal bore recess correctly. Used on all XJ550, XJ650 Turbo, XJ700-X, XJ750-X, XJ900RK, and XJ1100 models.

    HCP6838B OEM Mikuni throttle shaft V-seal, single:
    $ 5.00

    HCP6838BSET2 OEM Mikuni throttle shaft V-seal, pair:
    $ 9.00

    HCP6838BSET8 OEM Mikuni throttle shaft V-seal, set of 8:
    $ 34.00

    HCP38B Aftermarket Mikuni throttle shaft V-seal, single:
    $ 3.75

    HCP38BSET2 Aftermarket Mikuni throttle shaft V-seal, pair:
    $ 7.00

    HCP38BSET8 Aftermarket Mikuni throttle shaft V-seal, set of 8:
    $ 25.00

    ------------

    This is just the seals... he has all the hardware you would want, like butterfly retaining screws, shim washers, e-clips...

    Hey Shmuchaholic,

    Thanks a lot man - this is exactly what I needed. Of course, I've seen that Chacal is da man for the parts... how to contact him? website anywhere? And you are right on about the seals. Somewhere in my toolbox is the trophy string of 8 tiny little screws drilled out so the butterflies could be removed - all with success! I have the replacement screws but could never find the little V-lip seals. Do you know what kind of lube to use on these when reassembling?

    Those part numbers are worth the price of admission here - this is a gem of a forum! My how times have changed - the last time I tore down the carbs, there was no internet to ask for help!

    My Main Man Schmuck..........Thanks!!

    Assembly lube:

    b4) Aftermarket 1/2 ounce tub of pure Silicone Grease----this is the proper product to use when installing any rubber-based o-ring or seal. Petroleum-based grease will attack rubber, resulting in the deterioration and early failure of the rubber compound. Silicone doesn't affect rubber, provides good seal lubrication, can also be used as a "glue" to hold seals in place during installation, and to aid in the re-assembly of components. Use on throttle shaft o-rings or v-seals, fuel connector pipe o-rings, petcock o-rings and seals, fork tube seals and o-rings, and piston diaphram assembly. 1/2 oz tub goes a long way, because just like Brylcreem, "just a little dab will do ya'!"

    HCP1714 o-ring installation pure Silicone Grease:
    $ 6.95

    Hi Chacal,

    Wow! In browsing and searching the forums, your name came up over and over and after reading the list of parts (OK, I didn't read every one!) I can see why.
    I did read your treatise on care, patience, and organization when tearing down the carbs and can fully appreciate that, so before I order a bunch of stuff, I'll set aside the space, disassemble and see what all I'll need. I'm sure it will be every seal and gasket for all four carbs. It may after SpeedWeek before I can order, but I prolly need to let my parts soak that long! Thanks in advance.

    P.s. Sorry for spelling your name wrong, Schmuck. Can't type worth a crap today...
