    All,

I just wanted to ask about some gear oil. I've searched the forum and found a lot of information, some of it conflicting - so I just wanted to be sure.

I know the manual and all say get SAE 80 GL-4 for this bike, but as with others I'm having a heck of a time finding that. Then there was talk about GL-5 being ok, but others say it eats brass parts and don't use it.

    So my questions are

Is 80 still a good weight? (due to age and all that)

If its rated for GL-4 AND GL-5 is that ok?

I just bought a bottle of Royal Purple 'MAX-GEAR High Performance Automotive Gear Oil SAE 75w-90' that says its rated for GL-4 and GL-5 requirements. Is this ok? (I saw this weight listed in someone posting as the weight they use, it was all the Autozone near me had either way)

Basing my opinion on what I've already done to the bike, and what I have to do to the bike, that the PO said was fine - I plan on changing this oil again in about 100-200 miles just to do a flush (did the same thing with my engine oil and the second flush took out a lot of crap). So even if this isn't the 'best' one I can get, will it be ok to use for 100-200 miles and then I can drain and add in new ?

So depending on that answer, what does everyone recommend for a 81 XJ750 Seca that will get a 'lot' of usage this summer. (as in almost every day putting on around 60-100 miles minimum). I'm not driving it like I am being chased by the cops, but I am not giving Grandma a tour either.

    ;-)

    thanks!

If it says it will cover GL specs 4 and 5, you should be just fine.

    From the book.

80 API oil or 80W/90 hypoid.

GL-4, 5 and 6 are qaulity/additives rating and book says each is okay.

    Thats from the owners manual...

Others, I'm sure will argue with the engineers that built it...

Wow 'o wow. The sludge that drained from there couldn't have been oil. It was primordial ooze.

I threw in the new purple mentioned above, ran her for about 20 miles, checked it out; its already changed a nice black. I'm driving her to work tomorrow (about 60 miles roundtrip) and will drain and refill tomorrow night to finish the flush.

I do have a question. I filled her to the rim, ran her for about 20 miles, stopped, popped her back up on the center stand and let her sit. I came back about 10-20 minutes later and opened the fill bolt to take a look and she was overflowing...to the point where I had to put a catch pan under her. A good ounce or so probably came out... She wasn't overflowing when I filled her before the ride.... so why would it overflow afterwords?

Thanks for all the info so far. Each day she rides a little better ;-)

Heat causes expansion of the fluid...

but she was cold at that point....(was like 15-20 minutes or more)..?

Or is the heat dissipation of that oil take longer? (just for comparison, the engine wasn't even warm anymore, nor were the pipes)

Can't see where any "mystery" fluid could get in while you ride. Just because the fins and metal are cold doesn't mean the fluid (oil for engine) is back to room temp...

Sounds logical. I wasn't sure what could have done it; if something was plugged etc..etc..etc..

But that seems like a good possibility re: heat expansion. I am going to run her tonight and drain/refill again (to fully flush the crap out) and I will check the level again in the morning. So that way it will sit (cool) overnight.

    thanks
