81 xj750 turns over but doesn't run

    Hey guys I'm looking for some help with an 81 xj750 I just picked up. I have everything except 2 of the 4 rubber airbox joints and no air filter. The bike turns over but doesn't run. I'm restoring the tank and petcock as we speak due to rust and gunk. My question is with everything hooked up and a good flow of gas, will the bike run without the airbox attached. I don't need it to run good just enough time to assess the condition of the bike. Any questions and comments would be greatly appreciated. I have attached some pics to get a feel of what I'm working on. View attachment 15383

    it should run without the boots. have you done a compression test? that will tell you more about the engines status.
