82 650 maxim finally rollingrolling

Been a while since I posted anything, but between life doing what it does and never having any time, here is my nearly finished ride. Got it close and couldn't take not riding anymore lol. After playing with no less than 4 different versions of the extended driveshaft, I finally just machined a full one piece shaft out of some 4140 chromoly laying around. At about 9.5 inches of stretch the welded, pinned, etc just couldn't hold up well enough. Anyways here she is in raw but riding form. Questions or comments welcomed and appreciated.

 

Jeezus. How much welding went into the chain sissy bay? Also, that's gotta be the lowest seat height ever on an XJ! Have you weighed it since chopping the rear? Curious about power to weight on a bike like that. Must go like hell! Kule ride!

 

Haha yeah the chain was just some stuff I had laying around and it was tedious but I really like the look of it. I think the seat is around 20 inches and my bike looks like a toy parked with my buddies bikes now. Haven't weighed it yet but I'm sure I lost a few pounds losing the stock swingarm.

 

But with only a single disc to stop the whole thing with, I sure would not want to have to try and stop quick......I wouldn't go very far w/o the rear brakes hooked up.....

I'm concerned about not seeing enough vertical/diagonal support for the rear. Looks to me like a prime spot for the frame to fold up pretty easily . Not only is cross-bracing not there, the rear has been extended out which increases leverage. I'd look at that more If I were you.

 

I understand braking concerns, the rear never worked right, but I'm designing a hub adapter and whole setup to mount a disk. Issues with the additional frame being in the rear will be addressed soon as well. I am putting a couple uprights in that will be the base for adding passenger pegs. I am constructing a king and queen seat for easy install and removal for those times my wife wants to ride.

 

That think is looking so rad! I might be stealing your idea for the rear fender mount! I like that!
