Getting ready to sync the carbs on my maxim, the butterfly valves are completely shut as of the moment, from what I've read there should be a small gap about the size of a pin, what do you guys think? And also when syncing should I use the flaps or the rich and lean adjusters? Thank you for the help -yamaholic

The "rich and lean" adjusters are the pilot mixture screws, one per carb. You set those all at 2.5 ~ 3 turns out and leave them alone. Mixture tweaking comes later.

You SYNC using the three throttle adjustment screws. There is no adjuster for #3, it is adjusted via the main knob, and the others adjusted to it.

The linkage for #1 is "slaved" off #2, whenever you adjust #2 it brings #1 along.

SO: You sync #1 to #2. Then you sync #2 to #3 (which should bring #1 along to match.) Then you sync #4 to #3.

For best results, YICS should be blocked.

You won't be able to easily adjust vacuum to individual carbs without the tool installed. Read up on the yics blocking, you can do it DIY-style with a oily shop rag, etc..
