I have an 82 maxim 750 and the shift pattern is driving me nuts. This is the only bike that I have ever been on that has 1st all the way up and 2-5 down.Is there a way to reverse this?

So are you saying that 1st is supposed to be all the way down and 2nd through 5th up? I was told by the P.O that was setup correct.

I can get a pic sometime tomorrow. The linkage looks correct and seems to function fine but sometimes if I`m in 2nd and I am ready to shift to 3rd I shift to 1st lol. That will wake you up if you really are getting on it.

This is how the linkage is supposed to be set up:

If part #16 is pointing down instead of up it'll shift backward.

I dont know what I have but I tried to move the linkage and it really wants to be the way it is. If I move the linkage to force 1st all the way down then I loose 4th and 5th and it feels real tight and weird shifting into 2nd and 3rd. Is there any harm in leaving it 1st all the way up and 2nd~5th down. The only harm I see is forgetting the shift pattern and downshiftiing when I want to up shift---Plus it`s a little tense when that happens.

I do not think there is any issue with leaving it, its just different.

Supposedly a Seca replacement motor in a Maxim does that.
Does your engine VIN match ??

Stock is...... 1 Down, Neutral, 2-5 Up...there should be markings on the cover plate.

It seems your shift lever that bolts to the transmission block is pointing up...it should be pointng down......

easy to do reverse if you took it of for some reason......I know I did the same thing when I put my mine back on & then realize the mistake....

    see pic for correct way...

I realize their isn't much room to play with or the shifter hits the engine case. Both balljoints on the adjustment rod between the shifter and the shift shaft that goes into the trans should be more or less in the 12 oclock position they can easily be flipped by accident or on purpose. they should also be on the inside between the pivots (fulcrum) and the side cover. Watch your clearance in front of the shifter as it may hit the wires coming out of the timing cover.

Being that mafia101 is from Hudson, N.H., it is a good bet that he has a USA made bike & that his shift lever is upside down....check out the correct picture...
