Just bought this Maxim for $500 yesterday. It came in great condition, just needs a few minor repairs but it starts right up. I haven't had a Maxim in 3 years so I am excited to get it fixed up and on the road! I will post pics of the finished bike.

Well after a few weeks of work I finally got her rideable. I took her for a couple laps around the block and found out second gear is not good. I still have a lot of wiring work, fixing the clutch, some minor carb work and lining the tank due to a leak before I will be able to start on the cosmetic stuff.

When I first got my XJ1100J I had full intentions of doing nothing but restoring it back to its stock look. However now that I have had it for awhile I am really looking into making it a cafe style. I know that the XJ1100 isn't really the type of bike that is made into a cafe racer but I've come across one that looks really nice. Does anyone have any input as to what I should do with it?

Fix it and make it safe and rideable first. Ride it like that for a year then decide what you want to do. You have spent time to get it running, go ahead and enjoy it for a little while before you tear into it again.
I vote to keep it stock. Looks like all the parts are there and just need cleaning or polishing.
Think about what you are wanting the bike to do for you and decide from there. A daily commuter and light touring would best kept stock. If you want to just ride on the weekends with friends then chop it. I do hate to see a good XJ11 get cut though. In the end its your bike, make it what suits your needs.
Fixing 2nd gear does take some time but is not really hard to do. Look through these on xs11.com ,

Get it running good and join us next fall in the NC mountains.

That's my biggest problem, I don't want to cut the frame. I think I am just going to leave it stock. I hate to think about ruining a classic bike.
