the little cube relay under the gas tank directly under the coils...with -2red/white 1 black/yellow and blue wire..on the back it has 4H7-01
    And omron 2061D9
I’m trying to find one. It’s tested and failed. Does this have a searchable part #? Any other names besides what I wrote in the title? And can I just rewire without it?

    how did you test it?

The Ultimate Relay, Switch, Sensor, and Diodes Guide

Starter/Ignition cut-off relay (no color): front of coil rear mounting bracket.

    Identification:
    - on all models except XJ700 or XJ750-X models:
    - small metal (original) or plastic (replacement) "cube" relay, inked 4H7-00, 4H7-01, or 12R-01 on the top face.
    - has no colored paint mark on the bottom terminal connector block.
    - sometimes labeled or described in manuals and diagrams as a "clutch switch unit", a "neutral safety relay", or an "ignition cut-off" relay.
    - normally open; has an internal diode.
    - plugs into a connector shell which has the following set of wires going to it:

    Harness connector wire colors:
    - on all XJ550 all models, XJ650 all models, XJ750 all non-X models, and XJ1100 models:
    * Red wire with white tracer stripe
    * another Red wire with white tracer stripe
    * Black wire with yellow tracer stripe
    * solid Light blue (sky blue) wire

from www.partzilla.com you will have to look it up under the XJ550RJ as they are not listing maxim parts completly
    RELAY ASSY (12R-01)
    12R-81950-01-00

    $92.99
    $65.27

I have a couple of spares.

if you want to bypass it just connect the 2 red/white wires. warning this bypasses the safety switches

    what have you checked
550screlay.PNG 550relay.PNG ground for relay is achived through (sky) blue wire through the neutral switch when bike is in neutral or clutch switch Black/yellow wire when in gear

Thanks for the reply! The book has a fairly in-depth diode testing procedure I ran through and this thing failed pretty miserably. I’ll post a pic of the test list if I can.. Every other switch (kick stand, neutral, start, stop, clutch starting solenoid etc has passed). I have an 82 seca 550 I’m going to run the same test on the cut off relay to see the difference. I am still having trouble finding a replacement relay online.
I also took the case off the diode cube to check for corrosion with no luck.. clean as new...
Any ideas of what might make this thing go bad?? I hate to get s new one and have it crap out too!!!

the coil for the relay fails or the diode fails or contacts fail which sends voltage to solenoid. if coil failed you will get an open reading most of the time. this may be internal to winding or at connectors and may be able to resolder.
your internal diode may have failed which closes relay through the neutral switch ground
with clutch pulled in and sidestand up bike should start if it is the diode.

. you could install a new diode to fix the failed diode. it is a rectifier diode. a 1n4006 or 1n4007 would work just need to find a size that fits inside or wire it in externaly

if the diode block diode failed to a short this would keep the relay closed when sidestand is up and may have ruined internal diode

I’ll have to retest with that info in mind to tell what exactly failed.. great info!
1 ignition coil is questionable. Passes the test but has a slight crack in the casing and same coil had a bad spark plug wire end crimp. Corroded and pulled apart when inspected. The bike ran a few times this way in the quest to help it run better... Is it possible these problems could have spiked the system and caused a cut off relay failure?

no you can seal ignition coil by cleaning it and filling crack with rtc silicon

sparkplug wire end crimp? the spark plug wires screw into the cap and are molded into the ignition coil.

Fill the coil cracks with a 2-part epoxy. RTV won't last nearly as long.

These wires screw in on the spark plug side?! Huh I’ve never investigated that. The screw in part has been destroyed by corrosion.. I here old school guys say running with a plug undone isntgood. I thought maybe that might be the cause of the cut off relay crapping out. If there is a cause I would love to find it before I replace it.. insta silasforestdweller if you wanna see pics of projects

if 1 plug wire is off it is ok but not the mating plug from the same coil. coil pak 1 runs cylinder 1 and 4 coilpak 2 runs cylinders 2 and 3. yamaha uses a wasted spark ignition. both plugs fire .

Right, so for future reference what would the damage be if both spark plug wires were unhooked and started?

Quick nerdy question about the starter cut off relay.. the 82 maxim 550 has 4H7-01 omron and under that is 2061D9 .. my 82 Seca 550 has the same except under omron is 3041D9..—“these #s mean anything specific?— Might help me and others finding that used spare in the future!!

Edit: I just saw a pic of an 82 virago starter cut off relay and it had the same #s as my Seca on it!! ... is there a swap chart out there somewhere?

Last time I looked all of the relays are once-again available through Yamaha as new parts....for a price.

That’s a good read although it has few little crossover info and nothing about the #s themselves.. average is 65$ for the cut off relay in several locations of the web... I’m not rich so a used crossover chart would rock!!! I’m a nerd so deciphering the #s might just help!! Just a thought anyway:)
