A couple of weeks ago I was almost given ($100) an '82 Seca 650. It is complete and doesn't look too bad. It was kept inside so there is almost no rust and corrosion. My plans are to restore it back as close to stock as possible even if it takes me a year or two. I'm not too worried about the cost because I can spread that out and I don't plan on selling the bike when I'm done. I enjoy working on my other bikes so this is more of a personal satisifaction thing.
Last night I got around to checking the bike out. Took the seat, tank, and side covers off and everything looked fine and pretty clean except for a little bit of "custom" wiring. I hooked up a battery and the bike cranked over just fine. I then took out the plugs and stuck them back in the caps. I got good spark on each one. I hooked up a compression tester and each cylinder only had 30-40 psi. Not good. I put a little oil down each spark plug hole and ran another test. The readings jumped up to about 70-80 psi then. This tells me the rings are bad. I'm going to go ahead and take things apart and see how things are in there. The bike only has 11,000 miles although that can be a bad thing (sat a lot).
What I'm wondering about is the availability of parts for this bike. From my research it looks like this bike was made for only one year although I'm sure the engine was used in other models (Maxim?). I found a parts explosion on Yamaha's website (under MyYamaha) but I haven't called a dealer to see if the parts are actually available. I won't know exactly what I need until I get into the engine. Any advice or information on a good parts source would really be appreciated. Thanks!

First, did you do the compression test holding the carbs wide-open? And with a battery charger boosting your fully charged battery?
It would be unusual to have all 4 holes reading 30-40 PSI

The 650 Seca is almost the same as the 650 Maxim, except for an internal gearing ratio difference, and the shifter shaft location, and maybe the cam specs.

And congrats on your find and decision to restore a rare bike !

You know something...I forgot to hold the carbs wide open. I hadn't done a test in awhile and it slipped my mind. I will retest it sometime this weekend...wish me luck That's why I love these forums...someone will be along in a few minutes to help you out. Thanks!

    but nobody answered your question.

Some things can still be got from Yamaha but they are NOT cheap.

We have chacal. His parts catalog is here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14561.html and he stocks pretty much everything XJ including all sorts of stuff you can't GET from Yamaha any more.

The "XJ4Ever" forum also has tech articles and other valuable tidbits.

You are correct in your assumption that the 650 Seca is a rare bike, very much so here in the States where we only got them for ONE year. Good decision and welcome aboard!

Thanks for the links, especially about the brakes. I am going to go through this bike top to bottom and replace everything wear related (brakes, cables, rubber hoses, etc.).

+1 on brake hoses. Often ignored but very important on a bike that old. Since you're going to be replacing the brake hoses you might want to think about going to stainless steel lines, they improve feel GREATLY over the stock system. While you're at it you might want to kick it up a notch:

chacal stocks the EBC rotors at a price better than I've found anywhere.
