Looks great so far. Why not just pick up a tank that is closer to the shape you want instead of hacking that one up though? Either way, I'm anxious to see what you come up with.

But then it wouldn't be custom.
Like what you've done so far. What are your plans for carbs/filters and exhaust?

i plan on in the future running 4 seperate pipes for the exhaust and run them under the frame then go 2 left 2 right and give it a hot rod feel and i got jets to rejet the carb and i got pod filters

and to answer the tank question i love the stock tank but i hate how it flares back out so i want to cut from the the top and make it flow nice to my back bone

Good luck with the pods on cv carbs. Not an easy task on these XJ's, but it can be and has been done. Velocity stacks between the carbs and pods help, most people use the old airbox boots for this.
I believe the YICS passage also makes pods difficult to get right.

ya i might just get the yics sync tool and make a bracket to hold it so it dosent work any more becaue i know i'll have to resync them and i saved the boots because i'd heard that from a couple people and i got the jets to richen it back out and i have a dyno that i can run them on to make sure im running rich instead of lean

I had to block mine off permanently with my 2 carb mod that I did. I used a 3/8ths or 7/16ths steel rod cut to length, helped a lot. But If your keeping the channel open, definitely get or make a YICS tool.

2 carb mod thats something i also would like to do in the future once i have mulah but this bike will probably be a work in progress for a long time because one day i'll get a springer and then another i'll get something else until i either sell it or die

You can use a DNA springer for the XS650( check out TCBrothers website), wanted to do that also
Also wanted to convert to softail using a trailer leaf spring, but health problems got in the way.

I've been wondering, when it comes to re-jetting due to switching to 4 pods. Is that something where every bike of the same make, model and year will need the same new jets or does it vary from bike to bike? I've been led to believe that its just a guess and test sort of deal, as in if someone I know has done the mod with the same year, make and model I can't just order the same jets they were successful with and everything be all hunky doory. Is that true?

that is fairly correct that not all bikes even the same model and year because every engines different so what works on one won't necessarily work on another but it'll give you ball park of what you are looking for and if you get a dynojet kit like i got they come with a coupe different size jets and and adjustable needle so you can tune it in better

Well plans changed and im no longer modifying the original gas tank instead i ordered a Victory gas tank which looked pretty wicked on there and once i paint it all up it should be a wicked looking bike and maybe i'll keep the original tank to cut up and use to hide my electrics idk

That made me cry a little. You cut into a perfectly good stock tank, and now you're not going to finish making it look pretty. Good original replacements are getting more difficult to find (and more expensive when you do find one).

Redeem yourself...make it look good (even if you aren't going to use it on your bike 8)

ok so i got the carbs all rejetted and put together cut the front fender to use as a read fixed a crack in it and the victory tank was my friends that i set up there to look at it i ordered one which is on the way the mounting will not be that difficult its just to mount points up front and one in the rear the seats going to be the challenge since im going to have to make a seat pan to fit the tank and still have that bobber look im going for

the tank was fairly easy to mount just cut the orginal mounts and welded a left over piece of frame tube i used in half and welded it to the tank at the top center and drilled and welded nuts in the frame

Engine has been dropped back in the frame need to weld up the rear brake drum and the torque arm and then cut the shift linkages and find some new hand controls hopefully from a maxim that has handlebar mounted master cylinder and still needs paint

A steel ring attached to the frame that the shaft will pass through so you don't get a shaft in your hind parts if a u-joint or shaft fails. The original swingarm had a tube covering the shaft as a safety precaution. So you can make a tube or a simple ring attached to the frame. You may have seen one on a car before.
It may look better without it, but a heck of a lot safer with it and wouldn't be hard to make.
Picture yourself riding down the road having fun, then a weld on the shaft fails or the u-joint fails sending the end of the shaft in your arse or straight into the pavement and catapulting you into the air. That would suck.

I just noticed that none of us left any feedback. Man, we're dicks!

It's looking really good. I like the shape of the tank - what's it from? You're going to need to put the fender back on, as its also the fork brace. I'm toying with tearing the fender off the brace so I can have the fenderless look, too. Whichever one of us does it first, report back here, deal?

Well i was just looking threw some other forms and such with harleys and what not i see that they make them that just clamp onto the forks instead of being bolted in but also noticed that alot of people were also just changing the fork internals to better springs and oil and it solved the same issue
not sure if it helps but no harm in trying
