hey guys, i've been looking into rebuilding the carbs on my recent jx1100 purchase, after buying another bike and working on its similar mikuni constant velocity carb i decided i no longer want constant velocity carbs, i've been looking at the murrays carbs upgrade kit, it drops it down to 2 from 4, but after talking to murray and doing my own research it makes sense, every time your intake valve opens or closes its "chopping" the air, when you have one carb running 2 cylinders instead of cutting off the airflow and ruining your velocity (big deal) it diverts it to the other cylinder, that makes sense to me. everyone and their mother has seen an older v8 with one carb for 8 cylinders and even when people make 1000hp out of them they're using the same method unless they swap to fuel injection. does anyone have any insight on this kit or Murrays carbs in general? i want to do some head work, better carbs and a 4-1 exhaust, i think that would be a fairly mild but enjoyable build. sitting at 9.0:1 id really like to shave the head in moderation and get more power, torque and fuel economy through that.

Lots of vids on youtube for that name brand of carbs. You will have to watch and make a good decision if you want them or not.

I think if I was going to pay over $500 for a set of carbs, I would go with some flat slide carbs myself. I don't know if I would put that sort of money into my XJ1100. I mean I like the bike, but it is older tech. Going after the big HP and T, I will stay with a new modern bike with fuel injection. imho

The same guy also says that "Keihin" carbs are the way to go. I am sure they are $1k or close to it.

    Link to the Keihin site.

Murray's conversion kit is worthwhile if your old carbs are simply beyond repair or just not there at all. By the time you get another set and do a rebuild you won't be far off the cost of a Murray kit.
However, any talk of horsepower gains is just so much horse shite.
What you might get is (possibly) a torque gain, but meh.

i've got bikes that are fuel injected and high hp, that's not really my concern, a flat slide would be nice. but my carbs need gone through and i don't want a carb i cant put a pod filter on. if i didn't want to put money into a bike i wouldn't have pulled one from a field
