I recently put new friction plates in 82 Xj550 Maxim.I tightened the pressure plate bolts without a torque wrench due to the one I have not going down to 5.8 ft. lbs. I learned the hard way by breaking one off..anyway....
I tightened the bolts down to what I thought would be the 6 lbs of torque, which is ,I think just a little bit past where they are down all the way, like maybe 1/8 inch past.
This does not seem very tight although they are tight when I checked again,I couldn't move then without applying too much pressure.

Should I use lock tight? Does the pressure of the springs help keep it tight? Thus the reason for 5.8 lbs? Just trying to be safe fellas, dont want one coming loose while riding.. THAT wouldn't be good :!: ..... Mark

    You shouldn't need Loctite.

The 5.8 ft/lb is because the bosses they screw into are easily broken; and 5.8 ft/lb is plenty for them to remain tight.

I would recommend you get an inch-pound torque wrench. There are a LOT of low-torque items on an XJ that you'll need it for.

You did watch the orientation of the tabs on the plain plates, right?

Yes I did,the bike shifts great but just had questions on the tightness.
When putting the bolts back in I tried to use my regular torque wrench which goes from 10-175 ft.lbs.
Well it DONT WORK THAT LOW!! I founf that out when I broke the first bolt off but I had tightened a couple of others already, now I am worried about any damage that might have been done to the threads causing failure later on.

I will say tho that right now they all tightened up good and the bolt that I broke ,the broken part still in the threads wasnt tight at all I got it out with a real small screw driver, just turning it till it came out.
    Should I be worried?

That's a cheap option, and even though it's harbor freight, it's still better than "guessing" with a torque wrench outside it's usuable range.

I frequently test the result of my HF click torque wrenchs with a Sears beam type, and they've been good these last couple of years.

If you don't want to be worried, get any torque wrench with the proper range and USE IT! You can't even trust the accuracy of a torque wrench within 10% of it's limits.
