So I just bought an 82 XJ650 and got it home to discover that the wiring was a bit of a mess. The ignition and headlight fuses have been bypassed and the headlight is getting its power from a splice from the main switch. Fun times ahead. I have a lower res wiring diagram but some of the stuff is hard to make out. I was just wondering if anyone had a higher res image of the wiring. I would also gladly take any advice on how to go about tracking down the problem.

So far, I've purchased and new fuse box and am in the process of installing it. I checked the headlight relay and it was fine. The rear tail light works but the brake light does not.

I'd try adjusting your rear brake light switch. It needs to be adjusted after any brake pedal or actuator arm adjustments, and most POs don't even know there is a switch, so it doesn't get adjusted when they take up the slack in the brake.

    You need a manual.

But even before that, and certainly before you do any actual riding, you need to pull the rear brake down and check for signs of delamination: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html You cannot go by "feel" or how it works; you need to visually inspect the shoes.
