Sorry if this has been posted before but I have a 1982 yamaha xj650 Maxim and the headlight won't turn on even with the bike started and running. It runs great and I have power to my brake light with the running light and brake light working. I have no idea where to start troubleshooting.

Check for continuity on the headlight?

Sit tight there are real electrical wizards here that will offer better advice...

I'd start by pulling the headlight and seeing if it isn't just burnt out. You can check for 12 volts at the socket while you're in there.

check voltage both sides of fuse
and as suggested at headlight connector
ohm out the bulb 1 common blade to high blade then to low blade.

Not sure if that model has a reserve lighting unit but if it does then I'd check for power in and power out my 82 maxim 1100 had a bad one.

No reserve lighting on that bike.

Do the gauges light up once started? If they do, then check the headlightbulb first as kmoe suggested. Next check the headlight fuse. That model has a headlight relay under the left side cover too that may have failed.

Here is the wiring diagram with the headlight circuit isolated.

Blown headlight, or a wire fell off

    bad relay ground?
Bad relay ? remove it and test it. put 12 volts to tab hooked to black wire and tab to white wire. negative to black positive to white
do cluster lights come on ? another indicator of relay problem.

could be the white wire coming from alternator is disconnected/broken .
check diode in diode block too. AC voltage running through that relay would not be a good thing

just to add the running tail light and brake light are not included in the headlight system.
