does anyone know how to change the air filter on this bike and is it worth getting the K&N individual filter or get the one that sits in the box??

Stick with the stock airbox and your choice of filter- a K&N replacement for the stocker would be fine.

Pod-filters have their share of downsides. Search these forums for a lot more info.

If it's a stock exhaust keep the stock airbox, if its an aftermarket 4into1 you can go to seperates, but If you go to seperate air filter's you'll have to go through carbs again adding a stage 1 jet kit.

You have to ask yourself how your going to use it and what you want from it. It is a 25 year old bike, and it is only worth so much. So, is it worth it to you to put $$$ into it? Seperates will boost horsepower, but you'll forsake some torque at lower rpm's. Basically freeway speed roll on will not be as strong. But if you grab a gear, you'll pull harder on the upper rpm then it used to.

Just think about how you want it to be for you, and how you drive it, and how much money you want to put into it.

My bike is my Baby and although she may not be worth alot to anyone else, I would spend a fortune on her. I agree with the horsepower issue and torque but remember, she was made as a cruiser, so treat her right. To answer your orignal question, the K&N Filters, they increase Airflow only. If your Carbs are sync'd properly and colortuned properly, More airflow will throw these off and you'll have to Retune the carb.

Hi carriong, and welcome! I put the K&N air filter in my XJ. Although it's supposed to work with the stock fuel and exhaust setup, it definitely made the bike run a bit leaner than with the foam Uni that was in the bike. If you go that route, just remember to oil it before using.
