82j 650 j carb tuning too pipes

    hi all i picked up 1st xj few weeks ago 1st one. i dont know if pipes are stock
    i spoted another xj rider and his bike was very quiet compaired to mine. after making 4 good carbs out of 8 , bike starts with a touch of the botton. goes like a rockett too 7,000 rpm maybe half throttle but wide open surges and complains esp. in 4th or 5th gear. i think pipes are not stock or someone has punched out baffles. stock box is gone i have cone type air cleaners to install. can i drill out main jets and what size ? i have hours into carb rebuild useing best l;ooking parts had carb synced by local (good ) bike shop thanks,
