I probably have bought the fram CH6003 and maybe a filter from Yamaha, and MAYBE some Chinese junk off ebay but feeling a little lovey towards the old girl I googled oil filter cross references and found the WIX 24934 should be better (avail on ebay for about $9 delivered) and the puralator ML16803 is supposed to be the best but it looks like a spin on as compared to the cartridge I need. any thoughts??

so you're saying the puralator ML16803 is a cartridge? all the pics I saw (amazon and google images) showed a spin on can.

as you can see by K-Moe's post it is a cartrige

Question, on XJ550 filter, one side of the hole is recessed, the other isn't. Does it matter which side is toward the engine when installing?

NOTE: on all paper oil filter elements, the "flat" face of the filter element faces TOWARDS the engine, and the "concave" face of the filter element goes towards the filter housing cover (facing away from the engine case). Sitting within both openings of the oil filter element are the filter grommets. On the "concave" side of the filter, then comes the HCP1493 flat washer, followed by the HCP1494 or HCP1495 compression spring, and finally then the outer cover.

Chacal, thanks. Just to clarify, the order they 'go on' the center shaft inside housing is spring, washer, filter concave side first, then onto the bike?

I cannot emphasize enough how bad this advice is for our machines. Both of your examples have under-stressed, low-revving engines; exactly the opposite of an XJ.
Some of the less expensive oils can go out of grade within a few hundered miles when run in our machines. While penching pennies is a hobby of mine, I prefer to play the long game (I am not endorsing expensive oils or filters. Price (whether low or high) should never be the main factor when choosing which product to use.)

Your truck redlines at 5,500 RPM and has an entirely different valvetrain.
You sir might want to go do some reading: Bob Is the Oil Guy

Over the short-term you likely won't notice any problems. It's the long term I'm looking at. Even expensive oil and filters are cheaper than an engine rebuild. I agree that many of the filters on the market are gimmicky and not worth the expense, but just getting the cheapest isn't necessaraly the best choice. The price isn't what matters; how the product performs is, and that is a metric that is not always related to the cost.

I feel sad for you that you think everything is a con and a scam. I'd hate to live in that world.
If you doubt what the contents of a bottle are you can always send it to an independent lab for testing.

Corn oil and gauze pads are even less expensive than store-brand motor oil. Why not use those?
The simple answer is that neither is the correct product for the application.
