83 xj750 maxim starter trouble

    Battery seems to have a good charge, new relay solenoid, cleaned build up off the connections, hit the button and get one click then nothing. Roll starts alright. When it started going bad it just seemed weak but would work now and then.

    Put bike in neutral (this is the most important part of the test).

    Hook up battery cables direct to starter motor, see if starter spins (or you can jumper the solenoid studs, etc.)

    If starter spins, starter is good, and problem exists somewhere else (bad kickstand switch, bad relay, etc.)

    If starter doesn't spin, time to rebuild or replace starter motor.
