The bike ran fine last year, but when I pulled it out to start it once this winter, it wouldn't start and the oil light came on when I hit the ignition. I've changed the oil and tried different levels of oil in it, all with the same result. I'm thinking maybe I need a new oil level sensor? I'd like to explore all my options first, though.

Can't find anything on the internet showing where the oil sensor is. Can you tell me?

Yes it is bottom of the engine on left side it is partially covered by the header pipe..you might have to remove the muffler mount bolt and use a 2x4 to push down to get enough clearance to remove. I dropped my down without removing it the wire is a pain ..i cleaned with carb cleaner and worked like a champ...

One other thing your post said your bike wont start..just know the oil light is a level warning not oil pressure ...this will not keep it from starting...

The oil level sensor isn't what's keeping the bike from starting.
Don't bother with pulling it out just yet.

    Charge the battery.

Turns out my battery is shot. I didn't take nearly as good of care of it as I should have over the winter. Lesson learned. I'll be getting a new battery soon and hopefully that will solve the problem. Also, I'm brand new to this site as of today and it's really awesome to have such great input on the issue. I will definitely be back with more questions as my bike is a 3-year ongoing project build.
I truly appreciate all the input! Thank you!

I have a 83 xj750 also, I had a very similar situation last year when I pulled out my bike after winter. For me, the bike ran fine till I parked one time then it wouldn't start, just a clicking sound and the oil light on the indicator. Things that could be an issue, battery needs charging, starter solenoid needs changing (which you can test by manually skipping the solenoid [you can look up videos or other posts]), or you need a new starter.

I had to replace the starter so just be weary that that could be a potential situation as well. Good luck!

    It's just the battery.

Question Preston; why did you replace the starter instead of rebuilding it?
