when I bought my bike off this guy he had 4 hose coming of the carbs(1 for each carb).then he had them going to a air filter. I will put up pictures tomorrow if you need them. I looked at another bikes online and did not see them on. I was wondering what are the point that is their. I would like to take the hoses off because they look terrible. It is also hard to fit my pod filters on.

I assuming that you mean the rubber neck that connect each carb with the airbox, right?...If not I will need the pics...

The hoses that come off the carb are overflow drains. I would NOT recommend taking them off. Besides, when the carbs are in place, to boots are installed, and the airbox in its correct position, those tubes are just about invisible. They are black, and hidden in the shadows.

Zip-tie them to the side of each pod. Inboard of the pod in order to "hide" them better.

So over flow gas would go thru them tubes and thru the air filter. I bought the pods before I read all the bad stuff about them but just gonna give them a try. I did not see them on other pics of the same model maybe I they had them hidden like you said. I just don't understand that the gas would go thru the air filter.

No, it doesn't... They just droop over so if the bike tips over, the gas would drain somewhere else instead of on to a hot engine. They don't go into the airbox. The only hose that goes into the airbox is the one from the crankcase breather

Oh their is another small air filter that the overflow goes too. Not the crank case vent. the guy I bought it off of must have put it on their. All of the overflow hoses come together into a seperate air filter. I wonder if I could take that filter off and run everything down

Do you think I should remove the all together or just route them all down past the motor and get rid of filter

You know ... A fleeting thought: those hoses almost look like someone was trying to create a version of the Xj1100 "octopus". Maybe they had the wrong info, and actually were trying to 'figure it out'.

Hog, you're way too organized. How do you expect to lose any parts when you put them in neat little trays? Where are the peanut cans and baby food jars?;)

Haven't been able to get to mine yet, but here's all you need......

The hose between carb 1 & 2 is an overflow tube. its simply an empty tube about a foot and a half long or so. same for the hose between carb 3 & 4. They just exit the back of the rack, and droop down behind everything. it the bowls get too full, or the bike tips, the fuel just runs through the hoses to the ground. the hose that is between carb #2 & 3 and connects to the metal T is your incoming fuel line . get rid of the rest of that gobbledygook. it doesn't have any place or function there.

OK so take all the hoses off except the fuel line and leave it or should i get hoses and run them down. It really dont matter to me unless having no overflow tube is a huge safety factor.

I'd put overflow hoses on. I guess you could cap the connectors, but it's a safety thing and I'd as soon leave them there. Whether you go with the airbox or with pods, the hoses are just going to be two black lines between the carb boots or the pods. Once everything is installed you'll hardly see them.

85 XJ700 Airheads have breather port hoses coming off the top of each carb.

The PO took those breather hoses, and connected them all to a filter. Disconnect all that poop, but LEAVE the hoses off the breather ports... they should be about 12 inches long off of each carb.

hohenstein, not the little cast number in the oval on the edge of the bowl....I said on the bottom of the bowl--I mean on the BOTTOM of the bowl. There were a series of number printed on the bottom of the bowl. If none are, look on the sides of the bowls, or on the side of the carb bodies themselves.

Look at the pics he posted earlier. They are definitely Hitachi carbs.

I have seen these oddballs before. I have owned these oddballs before, some of the 85 airheads have them. (I think lower numbers, but i cant confirm)... As long as the jet sizes are good, he should be fine...

    @chacal, you got anything here?

ok bringing this thread back i am having trouble and want to make sure this is not the problem. As of now i don't have any hoses coming off of the Breather ports up top. i am not sure if i should plug them or run a 12 in hose of them. would the ports cause a high idle because like a vaccum leak.

On my 85 xj700n all 4 are long enough to route down and behind the engine and simply vent into the atmosphere. On mine there are actually a couple of clamps that they fit into. I would replace them all with hoses long enough to vent to the bottom and zip tie them if there are no clamps.

Yeah they're pretty long...about 12 inches, maybe? I don't think it will make any difference how it runs if you have or don't have them. As was already said up there^^^ they're overflow hoses and usually do nothing. I think if you leave the choke on too long, you might get drips coming out of them. Or if your bike falls over...
