After getting done with forks last weekend, I need to do the valve cover gasket next. Can someone give me a little guidance as to what I need to do in the way of valve adjustments or any other maintenance while I'm in there?

    Sure. Read this: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14827.html

While some of the "bike" details will differ, all the aircooled XJs' valve shimming procedure is the same. I did the tutorial on a 550 Seca but it applies to your bike too.

    And replace your "donuts."

Thanks! That's going to take some more digestion. Perhaps not as easy as I thought it may be. Might be a better project to wait a couple months on when the weather cools down some more.

Wont take too long - getting the cover off is at least half the battle (all those bolts)

Don't sweat it at least you don't have the 20 valve motor like I do. It doesn't take that long (besides waiting on new shims if you need them) to do and is alot easier than it looks. Just take your time keep everything organized you will be fine.

If you are replacing the valve cover gasket, my advice to you is let the gasket warm up say in the sun. Have a tube of good name brand gasket sealer available.
Turn the valve cover upside down. Trial, or dry fit the gasket if it will let you, there is only one way it will go on.
Line the receiving surface (channel) of the valve cover with gasket sealer, then put the gasket in trying to let it dry in place (dry properly in place of course which requires you to check on it a few times) then put it on the bike gently.
Bolt it down, and please observer the ft lbs settings and pattern in which they are to be tightened on those bolts. You don't want to break one.
