K-moe, starting another "85 XJ Maxim X (this time). My son found a solid bike for a real good price, the major issue is the horrible hack job on most of the wireing from a previous owner. I had been thru my maxim;s harness a few times and promised him i would run thru all the electrics for him. So far so good, except now i am testing the generators stator coil field . I have the factory manual for that bike with the ohms readings for all the components, the manual is saying to test the stator at .46 ohms (White -White). My question, I have 3 white wires and not getting any readings from two at the harness plug. I do have the brushes holder off to test and clean then, How do i check the Stator Coil, please and thank you ?

Should get the same readings from any 2 of the white wires. Maybe the wires are damaged between plug and coils ?

measure across the 3 white wires
    w1 to w2
    w1 to w3
    w2 to w3

for field coil clean copper rings with hard rubber art eraser and measure across them both

Thanks, field coil tested perfect @ 3.8 ohms, it does need smoothed out, thanks for the tip with the art eraser. Not getting the right readings on any of the 3 white wires on stator coil, can i check right at the coil itself ? And does it matter which one of the three white wires goes to any of the white wires into the rectifier. The harness plug has been cut off, not sure if previous got white to white in the same order as factory ?

If you find infinante resistance on any pair of stator wires you should fist inspect the wire terminals for signs of damage. If you find any you'll need to cut the wires back (or use sewing needles to probe the wires furher back along the insulation) and re-check, then put on new terminals (honsetly any damage is usually from arcing, and would be very obvious). The other step is to get a replacement stator. New or used won't matter, so long as the seller will accept refunds/returns if the replacement dosen't check out. You should laos inspect the current stator (HA!) to see if the failure is mechanical (from rubbing) and make sure that the source of failure is corrected so the replacement does not fail from the same cause.

The stator wires are all identical, and don't need to be in any particular order.

If there is any sign of an oil leak in the alternator housing, now would be a good time to replace the seal and the o-ring for the bearing carrier.

The three white stator wires coming out of the cover were ( 1 broke, 1 hanging on by a strand, and one just weak ) so now to solder and wrap and re-install starter.
I do have a bought regulator that's been tested, so I might as well change the old one. seeing the plug was cut off anyway, then onto the next things. Going to test TCI and diode and flasher relay while i have the harness exposed. Already tested pick-up coils, kickstand relay, field coil, brushes, starter relay, and battery. Wish me luck. Electric components are not my strong suit, but learned a hella lot building my Maxim 700N last year. Thanks to K-moe, XJ550H, and Tomanybikes. :D[IMG]
