YES, i have used the search function for what seems like 1/2 a day and found something close to the answer but NOT a definite answer. i have an 85 xj700 and i look on the back side of the motor (under the carbs) to adjust the timing chain. I see a 12mm bolt (with no lock nut) sticking horizontally out of the cylinder walls. i also see a 10mm bolt WITH a 14mm lock nut stick vertically out of the engine case. from what i have read, the cam chain adjuster is a "10mm bolt with a 12mm lock nut sticking out of the cylinder walls". the 10mm bolt with 14mm lock nut looks like any other adjuster i've seen except it's pointing down into engine case and you can BARELY get to it to adjust it. so hopefully you can see my confusion and can someone help!?

The Vertical Bolt w/ Locker keeps the Chain GUIDE set in its securing channel.

The Hex on the end of the The TENSIONER retains the Twin Springs which apply force to the Pawl and makes it ratchet to take-up Slack.

To MANUALLY have the Pawl take-up Slack:
    Remove the Plugs
Remove the Left-side Crank Cover exposing the Rotor.
The Rotor has a Square set of Flats to maneuver the Crank.
Begin by Rotating the Crank two full revolutions Clockwise.
Bring the Crank to a smooth and gradual stop.

Prepare to move the Crank --> Counter-clockwise.
Have an assistant "Drum" on the Tensioner Hex with the Butt-end of a Hammer Handle.
When the Tensioner is being Tapped upon present any Slack before the Tensioner.
Do so by QUICKLY turning the Crank --> Counter-clockwise.

This action will Pull the Chain up toward the Top of the Plant.
Any Slack will be presented before the Tensioner.
If there is sufficient Slack to take-up, ... the Pawl will MOVE and tighten the Chain.

It may be necessary to repeat the process a few times.
You might HEAR the Pawl CLICK as it ratchets inward to apply move tension to the Chain.
