So I tore down my '85 XJ700 to get it to run better. New plugs, air filter and carb rebuild kits were added. Now, all i get is some sputtering from the engine but it won't keep running.
Here is a list of what I checked:
    -spark is good
-all hose connections were as I remember
-strong battery witha a fresh charge.

Any help to rectify this would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly did you do durring your carb rebuild.
    Did you:
    remove jets
    mixture needles
    carb diaphrams
    emulsion tubes
fuel needle , seats and floats
clean everything real good and blow passages free
    bench sync
    wet set float levels
If you missed anything above you will need to revisit your carb rebuild

Don't forget to check the valve adjustments

Yes, I did all of this:
    remove jets
    mixture needles
    carb diaphrams
    emulsion tubes
fuel needle , seats and floats
clean everything real good and blow passages free

I did not wet set or bench sync as I am not sure how to do this. I did remove them again, this time making sure to blow all of the passages free.
Upon tear-down, I did notice that all but one of the float bowls was dry as a bone.

I did get it to fire with starter-fluid but would die as soon as it was gone. As it was running though, the throttle had had no effect.
Yes, I am a carb-rookie. Any suggestions for professional help?

    Thanls.

I will be attempting a 1985 XJ 700 carb rebuild in about two weeks. Please keep us updated when you find the problem! How difficult would you say the rebuild was and how long did it take?

Thanks and good luck finishing it up!

Something was keeping fuel from going to the bike.

Did you attach the vacuum line to the petcock?

Did you prime the carb bowls?

Is there anything which might block fuel going through the fuel line? (I have seen people put a shot-off valve in-line as they don't trust the vacuum setup.)

Open one or more of your drain screws, is there any fuel in the bowl? Do any of them have fuel in them?

The vacuum line is attached to the petcock. The fuel supply line is attached too. The rubber tubes coming out of the back of the carbs don't hook to anything besides the carbs do they?

I did open the drain screws and had fuel in the 2 outside carbs. Didn't check the other 2 since I went to bed disgusted.

Choke or throttle don't have any effect on the running engine however the cables are attached and look like they move the corresponding parts in the carbs.

    Perplexed and disgusted.

I am wondering if you ever figured this one out. I am having a similar problem. Bike wont run after carb rebuild, but it does fire up on starting fluid. If you got it fixed please share. Thanks.

It 'fires up' but does it stay running? If not your sync/idle adjustments may be off.

Try turning the idle screw up and if it starts hook up the carbtune.

Well mine only runs with starting fluid, and dies as soon as the fluid burns off. It sounds like the OP had the same issue.

Check the float level? You have to anyway, assuming they're clean, and when you do that you can figure out any fuel flow issues pretty quick.

You can pick up one of these radiator overflow tanks for like 10 bucks at an auto parts store to use as an aux gas tank.

Well I have done that, but will double check. I have a thread listing everything in detail, so I dont want to double post. I was just wondering if the op figured out his problem.
