hey gang...got a quick question for you guys.

Would an '86 700 virago rear wheel(spoked) be a total pain to get running on my '82 XJ650?

I think an '84 can be done with minimal fuss but not sure about an '86

    TIA!

Won't fit without modifications. The Virago wheel is a fair bit wider than the maxim wheels ( of course, now that I'm typing that I'm just having a quick thought of "is it just the tire that's wider, or is the rim itself wider, too......I'll have to go outside and measure them tomorrow!) and the maxim swingarm has very little clearance between itself and the tire already.

I seem to recall that there is a difference in the gearing, though the pumpkins will swap. Some of the viragos had a different size brake hub and shoes....they share a common size with the 750 Midnight maxim, and I THINK the xj700's.

Overall, yeah....it would be a pain.

So general consensus is that I should hold out for an '84 rear?

There is no reason to hold out for an 84 wheel.

If you cross check the parts you will find that all parts are the same on both with the exception of the hub, and outer rim.

The main difference between the wheels is that the 84 XV700 L/LC is black hub w/ aluminum rim, and the 86 XV700 SS/SSC is silver hub w/steel rim. Otherwise the wheels will interchange with each other. Both wheels are 15 X 3.00 with 140/90-15 tires

Will let you know how the 84 XV700 L/LC wheels fit.
Picking up a rolling carcass soon.

I am sot sure either i was going to try it on my 85 maxim x for the heck of it. I believe the splines on the pumpkin are the same for 82 later xj and virago. I put the chrome drum off an 89 on my maxim x. The rotors on the front are different i think as well as the calipers for the old xj they are the same as 85 and later. I do not believe the tire will fit your swing arm even tho its only a 15 its very tall. You could probably get a smaller tire to fix that. I think your front wheel brakes are going to be your biggest problem
