Im not exactly sure on the make of this currently as I just received this and not had a chance to go over it one bit. its a total project bike and I'm not sure its worth trying to really rebuild this but Im more interested in learning as I'm a newb...

So any suggestions on where to start and what have you would be greatly helpful.

It doesn't look like an 86, you should be able to find the vin on the frame and find out all the information on the bike.

That's not an xj700. 700's are shaft drive.....your's has a chain. It is also a two-cylinder. An xj would have 4. So, it's an XS.

The rims indicate a Maxim, the gauges appear to be for a 400.

I believe you have an xs400 Maxim. This was one of the goofy cross-overs that Yamaha made as they were playing around with the variations on the 400:

XS400 Special - straight spoke rims, 2 cyl, xs-style tank, chain drive

XS400 Maxim - swirly spoke rims, 2-cyl, xj-style tank chain drive

XS400 Seca - parallel-spoke rims, 2 cyl, seca styling, chain drive

and the XJ400 Maxim - swirly spoke rims, 4 cyl, xj style tank

There are many more details that are model-specific, but here's a VERY general description to start with.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with specifics for yours.
